Magic lantern for professional projection

A. Molteni. France, circa 1898. Reg. 00694

The lanterns made for professional and/or public projection were of high quality, especially in reference to their optics and lighting, which improved considerably starting in the seconf half of the nineteenth century. In questions of illumination, for example, they no longer used the former oil, petrol or alcohol lamps and opted for lamps mixing gases (such as oxhydric and oxyether) that produced a strong light, in spite of the danger involved in using them. The electric arc lamp was the solution to this problem towards the end of the nineteenth century
